Survivor Science Soundbite: The Potential of Psychedelics in Healing

Survivor Science Soundbite: The Potential of Psychedelics in Healing

Send us a text

In this first Survivor Science Soundbite, I’m bringing you a quick dive into a topic that’s getting attention in recovery science: psychedelics—specifically psilocybin, the active compound in ‘magic mushrooms’—and its potential role in stroke recovery. We’ll talk about some emerging research on psilocybin’s impact on brain health, neuroplasticity, and how it could someday support emotional and physical resilience post-stroke.

Plus, a reminder about this month’s Mid-month Meetup on Thursday, November 14, at 6 PM Eastern—an open, welcoming space for all survivors and supporters to connect and share insights. Head to survivorscience.com for details. Let’s kick off the week with something new to think about!

00:00:00.959 --> 00:00:01.500
What's up.

00:00:01.500 --> 00:00:01.800
What's up.

00:00:01.830 --> 00:00:02.370
What's up.

00:00:02.370 --> 00:00:03.450
What's up, everybody.

00:00:03.479 --> 00:00:06.059
Welcome to the first survivor science soundbite.

00:00:06.660 --> 00:00:07.200
I'm will Smith.

00:00:07.440 --> 00:00:10.470
And if you know me from You know, I like to keep it real.

00:00:10.919 --> 00:00:12.419
These sound bites are new thing.

00:00:12.419 --> 00:00:13.169
I'm trying out.

00:00:13.169 --> 00:00:21.420
It's a way of sharing quick insights each week as we've transitioned the podcast from the lovable survivor over to survivors science.

00:00:21.870 --> 00:00:24.539
My goal here is to get us thinking about what's possible.

00:00:24.929 --> 00:00:26.370
Just kickstarting the week.

00:00:26.760 --> 00:00:31.109
Little conversations that I don't always think about or have in the full episodes.

00:00:32.310 --> 00:00:33.719
No fluff, no bullshit.

00:00:33.750 --> 00:00:34.890
Just kind of talking.

00:00:35.609 --> 00:00:39.600
And sort of kicking off the week and then at the end of the week, we'll recap.

00:00:39.630 --> 00:00:40.380
See where we're at.

00:00:40.380 --> 00:00:42.450
See if I'm still thinking about the same thing.

00:00:42.840 --> 00:00:49.710
Hopefully episodes, the full episodes come out in the middle of the week will be a nice tie in, but sometimes I'm guessing they won't be.

00:00:50.909 --> 00:00:51.659
This week.

00:00:52.350 --> 00:00:53.100
I have a theme.

00:00:53.670 --> 00:01:03.810
I want to talk about something that might be, it might sound surprising, although if you've been paying attention to the news in the world, that may not be that surprising, but I think it has a lot of potential.

00:01:05.010 --> 00:01:11.340
Talking about recovery and science and in particularly psychedelics what brought this on.

00:01:11.370 --> 00:01:14.370
So there's been a lot of talk in recent years over.

00:01:14.730 --> 00:01:17.909
The use and exploration of psychedelics for.

00:01:18.750 --> 00:01:19.379
Veterans.

00:01:19.739 --> 00:01:21.480
Suffering from PTSD.

00:01:22.049 --> 00:01:26.069
I think there that is a great reason to get into this.

00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:30.120
I don't know a ton about it, but I'm just kind of exploring it.

00:01:30.689 --> 00:01:33.189
And I want to see what your thoughts are when it comes to this.

00:01:33.189 --> 00:01:38.799
Because I think based on a lot of the research that I've seen and come across, it seems to have tremendous benefits.

00:01:38.799 --> 00:01:40.959
I suspect like most things.

00:01:41.890 --> 00:01:45.129
It may work for some, and it may not work for others.

00:01:45.159 --> 00:01:46.149
That is the pro.

00:01:46.539 --> 00:01:47.859
Not really the problem.

00:01:47.859 --> 00:01:49.149
It just kind of the, the.

00:01:49.329 --> 00:01:51.340
The way things are with the human body.

00:01:51.368 --> 00:01:55.719
Some people's bodies and chemistry respond to certain things and some peoples don't.

00:01:55.750 --> 00:01:56.560
Unfortunately.

00:01:57.250 --> 00:01:58.329
But I do think.

00:01:59.049 --> 00:02:05.200
In a, you know, in a clinical safe setting, the benefits here for some are tremendous.

00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:09.699
And for some, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work out, but why not try it?

00:02:09.729 --> 00:02:11.050
Why not explore it?

00:02:12.579 --> 00:02:13.088
This is brought.

00:02:13.139 --> 00:02:18.028
But like really my sort of awareness of it over the last probably year.

00:02:18.129 --> 00:02:24.759
I tweeted at Joe Rogan and Bobby Kennedy last night because I know he's a big proponent of this.

00:02:25.449 --> 00:02:26.319
They both are.

00:02:26.409 --> 00:02:28.329
And I, I am too, frankly.

00:02:28.329 --> 00:02:32.319
I think veterans are somewhat are a group on veteran's day of all days.

00:02:33.009 --> 00:02:34.389
Our group that often gets.

00:02:35.229 --> 00:02:39.859
Brushed aside kind of like strokes, Thrivers a lot of similarities there, PTSD.

00:02:40.759 --> 00:02:45.169
They've seen major war, you know, we as stroke servers.

00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:50.179
I've likely not encountered the same things, but it's it's, there are similar components.

00:02:50.179 --> 00:02:56.359
And I think when you think about this specifically, and you're looking at, uh, Psilocybin.

00:02:57.109 --> 00:03:02.209
And the act of camp compounds and magic mushrooms as they're, you know, probably known as to you.

00:03:03.859 --> 00:03:05.659
I think it's worth investigating.

00:03:05.659 --> 00:03:12.799
I think some scientific research is particularly in the stroke field are really starting to explore this more.

00:03:13.579 --> 00:03:17.810
The benefits, very similar to the benefits that, you know, veterans.

00:03:18.149 --> 00:03:21.558
People with PTSD You know, the studies see tremendous benefits in.

00:03:21.979 --> 00:03:22.368
Covery.

00:03:22.399 --> 00:03:27.049
I've also been thinking about this because I know a lot of people talk about stem cells and stroke recovery.

00:03:27.889 --> 00:03:30.259
And so it's just really interesting to me.

00:03:30.259 --> 00:03:33.618
I think if there's the more things we can do.

00:03:34.308 --> 00:03:38.299
The more tools we can offer survivors ongoing longterm.

00:03:39.859 --> 00:03:41.769
You know, the better why not?

00:03:41.859 --> 00:03:42.849
As I always say.

00:03:42.949 --> 00:03:44.389
So there was a recent study.

00:03:44.389 --> 00:03:51.469
There was a podcast that for I'm blanking on the name right now, but I, I was listening to a podcasts where they were kind of starting to investigate this.

00:03:52.610 --> 00:03:59.210
And do you know, a lot of the benefits of a psilocybin are helping reduce brain damage, helping improve.

00:03:59.750 --> 00:04:02.719
Movement in animals, recovering from strokes.

00:04:02.789 --> 00:04:04.889
They discovered silicide Lynn may.

00:04:05.580 --> 00:04:10.409
May enhance neuroplasticity, which is again, the brain's ability to rewire itself.

00:04:10.439 --> 00:04:15.989
Even if you're not familiar with the term, or you're likely familiar with the experience that your brain starts to.

00:04:17.069 --> 00:04:24.029
Over time and depending what kind of work and what you're doing and how you're functioning and where you're at in your recovery.

00:04:24.029 --> 00:04:25.769
You might be experiencing this.

00:04:26.610 --> 00:04:27.538
That's one reason.

00:04:27.538 --> 00:04:29.310
I mean, there's, there's a ton of reasons.

00:04:29.310 --> 00:04:30.389
There's a lot of benefits.

00:04:30.389 --> 00:04:32.370
I can't see the downsides.

00:04:32.370 --> 00:04:35.519
I just think we need to keep trying and helping because.

00:04:37.589 --> 00:04:40.829
You know, our health system is kind of failing us.

00:04:40.870 --> 00:04:47.889
I do believe that those that are able to get into acute treatment and worked with therapists over long periods of time.

00:04:48.670 --> 00:04:49.660
There are benefits.

00:04:49.718 --> 00:04:50.560
There's no doubt.

00:04:50.589 --> 00:04:50.889
Right.

00:04:50.889 --> 00:04:55.180
But they aren't living the same thing we're living with as survivors.

00:04:55.180 --> 00:04:58.540
So again, I think anything we can do to help promote.

00:04:59.860 --> 00:05:02.709
Explore and whatever we can do.

00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:06.790
Because again, stroke is, there is no cure for stroke.

00:05:06.790 --> 00:05:07.899
There's no magic pill.

00:05:08.589 --> 00:05:09.968
You know, but I think.

00:05:10.718 --> 00:05:13.180
I think there are a lot of things about stroke that are interesting.

00:05:13.180 --> 00:05:14.649
We go through an experience.

00:05:14.649 --> 00:05:17.829
We learn a lot about ourselves, some more than others.

00:05:18.819 --> 00:05:19.718
It's not easy.

00:05:19.750 --> 00:05:20.709
It's hard.

00:05:20.829 --> 00:05:23.139
Even if you put a ton of work in.

00:05:23.740 --> 00:05:31.899
The benefits, you know, they're great, but like, That ability to be the way we were potentially before the stroke.

00:05:32.649 --> 00:05:36.610
Is kind of like, it's kind of like a dream I think we all want it.

00:05:36.610 --> 00:05:40.629
I think we all adjust to knowing the fact that we may never get there.

00:05:41.379 --> 00:05:44.259
And some of us, you don't want to get back there.

00:05:44.259 --> 00:05:50.680
And there's no reason that we can't and anything we can do to aid in that process, I think is something worth exploring.

00:05:51.430 --> 00:05:54.730
Again, there was another review from frontiers in neurology.

00:05:55.870 --> 00:06:05.649
Highlighting how psychedelics, you know, aid and brain repair and promoting neurogenesis and reducing inflammation, which is, you know, for me, inflammation is a big one.

00:06:05.649 --> 00:06:09.670
I think all stroke survivors experience it, but especially me with Ms.

00:06:10.600 --> 00:06:16.029
Reducing inflammation, obviously changing my diet and exercising has played a huge role in that.

00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:17.529
But I'm lucky.

00:06:17.529 --> 00:06:22.480
I worked really hard, but there are people who want to work really hard at their recovery.

00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:26.439
And for a number of reasons, they may not be able to.

00:06:26.439 --> 00:06:26.980
So.

00:06:28.060 --> 00:06:31.509
You know, it's not as easy as just saying, Hey, go run 20 miles a day.

00:06:31.540 --> 00:06:35.470
Like not everybody is unfortunately able to get to that place.

00:06:35.709 --> 00:06:36.939
Hopefully they can.

00:06:37.779 --> 00:06:39.699
And it's just really interesting because I think.

00:06:40.480 --> 00:06:47.470
This is, those are the kinds of people that people that want to put in the work and do the work, but can't yet get into the work.

00:06:47.829 --> 00:06:50.860
In terms of physical activity and walking and.

00:06:51.730 --> 00:07:01.930
You know, it sounds easy to people that haven't experienced the stroke, but for those that have, we know how hard it is just to get from a wheelchair to a Walker, to a cane.

00:07:02.680 --> 00:07:05.230
And then see people can't go beyond the cane.

00:07:05.329 --> 00:07:09.889
For a number of reasons for any reason, but like, it's not because they don't want to put in the work.

00:07:10.339 --> 00:07:11.899
There just may be other reasons.

00:07:11.899 --> 00:07:16.550
So I think why this all matters is because, you know, as a stroke survivor, I'm always exploring.

00:07:17.149 --> 00:07:19.550
What might help in recovery and support others?

00:07:19.610 --> 00:07:23.779
I think people who, again, who want to put in the work, but maybe aren't able to put in the work.

00:07:23.779 --> 00:07:25.519
This is why it's really interesting to me.

00:07:26.149 --> 00:07:28.819
This is just another tool in the toolbox.

00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:30.709
I know that's a corny cliche, but.

00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:33.110
Again, everybody is different.

00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:34.910
Every stroke is different.

00:07:35.089 --> 00:07:37.639
Anything we can do to help each other.

00:07:38.360 --> 00:07:45.470
In terms of research and, and help doctors who are overwhelmed and nurses and all the medical professionals.

00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:48.680
They want to help us as much as we want their help, but sometimes.

00:07:49.399 --> 00:07:50.629
It just gets to a point.

00:07:50.689 --> 00:08:02.480
And so I think, you know, this conversation about psychedelics is really interesting because again, we're seeing a lot of studies come out where people who have suffered severe PTSD or other.

00:08:03.319 --> 00:08:05.449
Major brain injuries from war.

00:08:05.959 --> 00:08:09.980
In particular veterans, you know, I think there's a lot of similarities here.

00:08:09.980 --> 00:08:13.279
It's obviously not an exact one-to-one, but I think being able to.

00:08:14.779 --> 00:08:15.800
People that have had.

00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:18.649
You know, I did an episode last week on stroke and PTSD.

00:08:18.680 --> 00:08:24.769
Again, it's not the same as being a veteran and experiencing PTSD, but there are enough similarities.

00:08:24.829 --> 00:08:29.720
But it kind of got me thinking about this and kind of the question I wanted to explore here.

00:08:31.220 --> 00:08:33.980
So, you know, these are all things that I'm thinking about this week.

00:08:33.980 --> 00:08:36.980
Again, this is the first, uh, ever server science soundbite.

00:08:37.039 --> 00:08:39.769
Again, five quick, quick five, 10 minute episode.

00:08:40.379 --> 00:08:43.350
Before we wrap this one up, I do want to let everybody know coming out.

00:08:43.450 --> 00:08:46.779
So this Thursday, November 14th, six to 7:00 PM.

00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:49.330
You can join the open.

00:08:49.929 --> 00:08:57.820
I'm calling it the bid month meetup for all survivors, it's open to all survivors, caregivers, anybody who's involved with stroke, part of the stroke community.

00:08:58.299 --> 00:08:59.409
Wants to get together.

00:08:59.799 --> 00:09:01.330
It'll be I'm hosting the event.

00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:03.190
You can go to survivor science.com.

00:09:03.190 --> 00:09:05.769
There's a banner in the bottom of the website.

00:09:05.799 --> 00:09:07.809
Uh, you can't miss it to sit.

00:09:08.019 --> 00:09:09.009
It's a fixed banner.

00:09:09.789 --> 00:09:10.779
Where you can sign up.

00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:15.828
All you have to do is sign up and then obviously you gain access to the link for this Thursday nights.

00:09:15.828 --> 00:09:16.250
Call.

00:09:16.729 --> 00:09:17.629
Hope you'll join us.

00:09:17.659 --> 00:09:18.948
Hope you'll come hang out.

00:09:19.009 --> 00:09:23.750
It's always great meeting other survivors, seeing what's working, connecting, talking.

00:09:24.318 --> 00:09:26.539
It's just meant to be open and fun and free.

00:09:26.539 --> 00:09:29.360
And, you know, we can, we can talk about anything really.

00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:32.149
We can talk about how your recovery is going, how your week's going.

00:09:32.719 --> 00:09:33.769
What are you trying to have?

00:09:33.769 --> 00:09:34.938
You, have you listened to this?

00:09:34.969 --> 00:09:39.139
Are you interested in the possibility that psychedelics might offer as a soak?

00:09:39.169 --> 00:09:39.649
So are.

00:09:40.188 --> 00:09:46.969
Maybe you've tried stem cells or other things like Botox, you know, I've talked a lot about my Botox experience.

00:09:47.240 --> 00:09:48.349
It was very helpful.

00:09:49.009 --> 00:09:50.419
In particular with my leg.

00:09:51.139 --> 00:09:53.089
But I had less success with it in my hand.

00:09:53.169 --> 00:09:56.889
But it was great to try it because you know, it's safe, reasonably safe.

00:09:56.919 --> 00:09:58.750
I mean, that's, that's relative term.

00:09:59.409 --> 00:10:05.980
Everybody's different, but I think it, you know, having opportunity to try these things and, and really help myself kind of.

00:10:06.669 --> 00:10:07.629
Progress and.

00:10:08.169 --> 00:10:11.980
Botox wasn't meant to be a quick fix solution for me.

00:10:11.980 --> 00:10:14.318
It, it, it was, it aided me.

00:10:14.948 --> 00:10:16.568
To kind of get to the next step.

00:10:16.600 --> 00:10:23.019
It's always, if you've listened to this show, we know it's always about taking these small micro steps and kind of building over time.

00:10:23.769 --> 00:10:24.549
It's all a guy.

00:10:24.549 --> 00:10:27.370
I had my stroke and I started running toilet 20 miles a day.

00:10:27.370 --> 00:10:31.328
I mean, that was in a wheelchair for all of 2020 for the first year, year and a half.

00:10:31.328 --> 00:10:31.688
Probably.

00:10:32.529 --> 00:10:34.208
And so it's been a pro progressive.

00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:37.509
Uh, progressive path and over time.

00:10:37.568 --> 00:10:40.269
You know, There was little days and weeks have edited up.

00:10:40.328 --> 00:10:41.889
And now I'm five years out.

00:10:42.519 --> 00:10:45.549
Fairly better than ever, although I'm particularly tired today, but.

00:10:46.360 --> 00:10:48.370
You know, That's part of stroke.

00:10:48.429 --> 00:10:53.799
So again, if you want to sign up, go to and join the mid bum, meet up, go over to survivors science.com.

00:10:55.029 --> 00:11:06.489
To wrap this up, you know, just curious, what are you thinking about what's on your mind in terms of your stroke recovery, have you considered other unconventional approaches are always things I'm learning about things I'm curious about.

00:11:06.909 --> 00:11:12.369
I do feel, I'll say this probably now for the rest of my life, I feel about 85% recovered.

00:11:13.179 --> 00:11:14.438
But that depends on the day.

00:11:14.438 --> 00:11:15.759
That depends on the time.

00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:19.899
That's, if everything's working out perfectly with oil, rarely does.

00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:22.169
But yeah, just curious to hear your thoughts.

00:11:22.169 --> 00:11:23.850
So what do you want to talk about in these future?

00:11:23.850 --> 00:11:25.230
A little soundbite episodes.

00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:34.980
I'm going to do, I'm going to try to do two of these a week in between, uh, releasing full episodes each week, usually on Wednesday, but it could be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

00:11:35.669 --> 00:11:40.980
And then we'll do another one of these quick sound bites on Friday to wrap up the week and see how you're doing.

00:11:41.009 --> 00:11:42.600
See how my thoughts have changed.

00:11:43.289 --> 00:11:43.830
Anything else.

00:11:43.830 --> 00:11:48.629
I kind of think that might be worth a conversation, but may not have made it into a full episode.

00:11:48.629 --> 00:11:48.990
So, yeah.

00:11:49.019 --> 00:11:49.980
Thanks for tuning in.

00:11:50.340 --> 00:11:52.470
To the first soundbite for survivor science.

00:11:52.529 --> 00:11:57.870
And, uh, I hope this gives you something to think about and I'll, again, I'll be back on Friday to wrap up the week and share my thoughts.

00:11:58.679 --> 00:12:00.059
Let's see, what's evolved and changed.

00:12:00.059 --> 00:12:01.379
And what I've learned since then.

00:12:02.129 --> 00:12:04.049
Until then take care of keep pushing forward.

00:12:04.049 --> 00:12:05.940
And remember you're not in this alone.
